What is motivational leadership?

When we looked at what made the difference between those companies which simply survived and those companies that thrived we noticed two key ingredients:

  • The ability to motivate
  • The art of leadership

The ability to motivate, to inspire, to encourage and to provide stimulus so staff want to go the extra mile, give the energy needed to deliver competitive advantage.

Combine this with the ability to set a direction and create an environment where each and every person knows how they can contribute, and you have a winning combination.

So what do motivational leaders do?

  • They innovate, take risks, develop and inspire.
  • They challenge the status quo, ask what and why and know what needs to be done
  • They take time to know their people as individuals, what makes them tick and learn how to get the best from them

In short, they have a fundamental impact on the ability of the organisation to achieve its ambitions

(Daniel Goleman quote from The New Leaders, “Great leaders move us. They ignite our passion and inspire the best in us.”)

And what is it like to work for a motivational leader?

  • You go the extra mile in your work
  • You know what is expected of you and you are passionate to succeed
  • You feel emotionally connected to the team around you and are committed to making sure it succeeds
  • You feel proud
  • You have high energy and enthusiasm
  • You feel you use your skills and talents every day

The business case

A recent study by Towers Perrin of 50 companies over a one year period showed that those organisations with high employee engagement had a 19% increase in operating income and almost a 28% growth in earnings per share. Conversely companies with low levels of engagement saw operating income drop more than 32% and earnings per share decline 11%. And leadership and motivation are proven to have the highest impact on employee engagement levels.
